How to register a trademark

A trademark is a visually perceivable distinctive sign that identifies and distinguishes products or services. At UFRRJ, we register marks for administrative units, laboratories, research groups and technologies.

When it makes sense

  • Identity of a laboratory or center
  • Extension or research programme
  • Technology/product developed at UFRRJ
  • Recurring research-related events

Law 9.279/1996 — Industrial Property Law. Registration grants national territorial exclusivity for 10 years, indefinitely renewable.

Before registering

Run a prior search in INPI's e-Marcas system to check whether the intended mark already exists. Similar marks in related classes may be barred.

How to send to the Agency

  1. Download the Trademark Registration Service Request Form
  2. Fill in: trademark name, NCL class, products/services description, visual identity (if any)
  3. Send to nitrural@ufrrj.br
  4. The Agency files at INPI via e-Marcas

International protection

Through the Madrid Protocol, UFRRJ can extend trademark protection to other member countries. The Agency assesses on a case-by-case basis when there is an international commercial strategy.
