How to obtain a Geographical Indication (GI)
Geographical Indication is an industrial property instrument that distinguishes the geographical origin of a product or service when that origin grants relevant attributes or notoriety.
Two categories
| Type | What it is |
|---|---|
| Indication of Source (IP) | Geographical name that has become known as a centre of extraction, production or manufacture |
| Designation of Origin (DO) | Geographical name whose qualities or characteristics are due exclusively or essentially to the geographical environment (including natural and human factors) |
Who can apply
GI belongs to the collective of producers or service providers established in the territory. It is not an individual title. Hence, typically an association, union or cooperative applies for the registration.
