For researchers & students
Your discovery deserves protection.

Before you publish, submit. The NIT conducts patentability analysis, drafts filings, follows the INPI and makes sure your name stays indexed to the invention — without slowing your paper down.

  • Novelty & inventive step analysis
  • INPI filing and international (PCT) protection
  • Royalty split: 1/3 to the inventor
For companies & industry
License technology ready to scale.

Explore the UFRRJ Technology Showcase — assets in agribusiness, biotechnology, veterinary, engineering and health sciences, with defined TRL and legal support for partnership.

  • Licensing, assignment and R&D partnerships
  • Standardized NDAs and contracts

Researcher's guide

Questions we hear every week.

The most common questions from researchers starting to protect a creation. For the full guide, talk to the team.

No. Brazilian law only protects concretized intellectual creations — patents, industrial designs, trademarks, copyright, software, cultivars, geographical indications, and know-how via confidentiality agreements. An idea alone, without development, cannot be protected.
Public disclosure — papers, conferences, social media or any accessible medium — can eliminate the novelty requirement and block the filing. Before publishing, talk to the NIT to set a strategy.
No. The law requires a clear and sufficient description that allows reproduction by a specialist in the field. Models, drawings and experimental data help, but aren't mandatory.
Under Law 10.973/2004, UFRRJ owns the technologies developed at the institution. The return is split in three equal parts: 1/3 to inventors, 1/3 to the unit/department, and 1/3 to central administration — with UFRRJ's 2/3 reinvested in innovation.
Yes. Via the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and direct filings in other jurisdictions, whenever relevant to the commercial strategy. The NIT runs and monitors the process.
