How to license a UFRRJ technology

Licensing is the instrument by which a company acquires the right to commercially exploit a technology developed and protected by UFRRJ — while title remains with the university.

For whom

  • Companies that wish to manufacture, commercialize or internally use a technology from the UFRRJ Showcase
  • Formalized academic spin-offs
  • Cooperatives and associations of rural producers

Licensing types

TypeMeaning
ExclusiveOnly the licensee may exploit the technology
Non-exclusiveUFRRJ may license the same technology to multiple companies
AssignmentDefinitive title transfer (rare, specific cases)

Flow

  1. Identify the technology in the Technology Showcase
  2. Request contact through the form on the technology's page or by email to nitrural@ufrrj.br
  3. NDA — Confidentiality Agreement signed if confidential technical details are to be discussed
  4. Negotiation — licensing term, scope, royalties, exclusivity, duration
  5. Legal review by the Federal Attorney's Office at UFRRJ
  6. Signing and registration with INPI when applicable

Typical royalties

Percentages vary by technology type, maturity (TRL), exclusivity and market. In general:

  • Running royalty — % on net revenue (typically 1% to 8%)
  • Upfront payment — fixed initial value, often offset against future royalties
  • Milestones — payments tied to development milestones

The internal distribution of UFRRJ's share follows Law 10.973/2004.
